For our second project at Scot Beck Fold, Troutbeck we were initially engaged to explore options to create an ensuite bathroom at first floor level. The scope quickly developed when we saw an opportunity to resolve the awkward internal circulation. Scot Beck Fold developed from a small farm house with attached agricultural buildings which were converted in the 1970’s to a large living room & kitchen dining space. However, the nature of the linear development meant accessing the first floor of the original farm house required passage through these spaces.
Our solution was to relocate the circulation to the outside of the building thereby simplifying the link between the ground floor rooms and forming a new staircase to access the first floor. The extension comprises a simple air dried structurally glazed oak frame with a stone clad stair tower. The new circulation allowed us to reconfigure the internal rooms and create a new master ensuite bathroom, which was the original starting point for the project.
